Newborn session informations

What is newborn photography?

Newborn photographs are more than simply capturing an image. They are about capturing and preserving the essence of a baby’s first days. They are about reflecting a moment in time and exploring the depths of the first few weeks of life! Never again will the physical features of your little one change so quickly.

Newborn photography is such a rare opportunity to capture your little one’s very first qualities, choosing to preserve your child’s very first days. Investing in newborn photographs for your little one is something you will never regret. Your images will be treasured not only by you and your loved ones, but by your baby as he/she grows, and for generations to come.

Informations about session

• Number one and most important… Relax and have fun!
• Due to the frequent breaks needed to feed, change, sooth and get baby to fall asleep, newborn shoots often last longer than the average session. Please be prepared for your session to last anywhere between 1 and 4 hours. Feel free to bring your Laptop, a book, magazine or take a nap while you’re at the studio. I know it can get boring!
• Be patient and remain calm. If baby is cranky and not cooperating please do not worry. We have plenty of time to allow him/her to get comfortable and if you are stressed baby can feel it!
• If baby needs to nurse, have a bottle or a diaper change we can take a break at any time… We are working on baby time!
• Feel free to have some special mementos ready for the shoot, if desired (ie: handmade from grandma, knitted caps, booties ect.) These are great for making babies 1st pictures even more personalized and special.
• Please only bring either baby’s dad or grandma or a friend. If there are too many people at the studio, it will be distracting to myself and the baby.
• Be ready for pee (and poo)! I don’t need to tell you that newborns pee/poo a lot. Unfortunately, we may get peed on. Have a backup change of clothes for ready yourself in the event that this does occur – especially if you are in some of the pictures. I can almost guarantee that baby will pee and poo on my blankets and props. This is OK! It is completely expected and I never want you to feel bad or stressed about it. I wash all of my items after every newborn session, and it will all come out.
• DO NOT forget the pacifier!! If the baby takes a pacifier, you can trust me that you’ll want it there during the session!

Some advice  how to get your baby ready for the session:

1) 2 hours before the session please remove all clothing that can leave marks (socks, loosen diaper, nothing with elastic around wrists/ankles that can leave marks.) I do pretty much all of my sessions with babies in their birthday suits. Newborns SWIM in clothes and honestly – don’t look good in them. I’m sure you noticed this on my website!
2) Your little one will need to be kept awake for a solid 1 ½ – 2 hours before the session. I know this isn’t easy, but doing so produces the best sleepy images. I need them to be very very tired (cranky tired) before you feed them.
3) Please bring the baby in a button-up or zip-up sleeper. Preferably a loose fitting one. One of the worst things is when baby arrives sleepy in his/her car seat and then you have to remove shoes and socks, pants, and take a shirt off over their heads – which almost always wakes them up. Instead, it’s so simple to zip down and slip off pyjamas while baby remains asleep! And if the pajamas are loose-fitting, then ideally there won’t be many lines left behind on the baby’s skin.
4) Please nurse/feed the baby when you get to the studio. They will need to be sleepy and full (this is KEY!) They can finish eating while I am setting up and once we’re ready to shoot, they should be in a milky dreamland from being full and satisfied.
5) Once the session starts your baby is mine =D I will ask for dad/grandma to be the one to help if they are available or will hold/move the baby myself. The reason for this is if baby smells mom they may wake to eat. The way to avoid this and keep sessions short is to keep them away from anything or anyone that will wake them. The smell of milk does this!
6) They WILL cry (maybe) – it’s OK! I do nothing that hurts the babies – I don’t force them into any positions that are uncomfortable for them. Babies are VERY flexible when they are born (from being in the womb). They sometimes wake and cry a bit just from being moved around. Some babies sleep the entire time and don’t stir at all. Others take more time and patience.
7) If baby stirs and starts rooting I will give them to you to feed. Typically if you follow steps 2 and 3 we will be good for 2 hours and by the time he roots the session will be over.
And that’s pretty much it! It seems like a lot but it’s pretty simple – hardest part is keeping him awake for two hours before your session! It will be worth it – promise!
What to wear? - Mom and Dad

As far as clothing? Keep it simple. Throw in a little color if you’d like, but skip the busy patterns. I am also big fans of skin-on-skin portraits with you holding your baby against you. They’re so simple + timeless! So if you want some portraits like this with your newborn, consider a strapless top or tank as an alternative.
For the black & white portraits, we suggest wearing a solid black long sleeved top. The dark top is both flattering to the mother who has just given birth as well as being a lovely contrast to the baby’s skin. We recommend long sleeve shirts to cover the arms, thus capturing a portrait with the emphasis on the baby’s features.
Remember it will be very warm at my studio to keep your baby warm and sleepy. So please dress lightly or in layers.

What to bring?
• Some lunch or snacks / drinks for yourself
• A pacifier
• Plenty of nappies and baby wipes
• Formula milk if you are not breastfeeding

I think that is all and I look forward to photographing your little one!
